I was in Blockbusters today...

...and I saw a promo for Blu Ray, and I must say I was impressed !
It included a trailer for "2012" starring John Cusack.
The trailer started and it looked okay to me.
Then the logo "BluRay" appeared on the left of the screen, and the logo "DVD" was on the right.
Then a vertical white line started moving from right to left, and there was a vast cityscape on the screen. As the white line moved, the buildings changed from blurry blobs to pin - sharp detailed buildings !
I was ASTOUNDED !! :eek::D
Is THAT really what BluRay is like or was that a "fake" trailer just to sell BluRay ?

That's exactly what Blu-ray is like. Of course, it depenRAB on what player you get and what TV you own. Some blu-ray films are better than others.

Well, it depenRAB what it was shown on, for a start-was it a Blu Ray or a DVD player?

It's quite easy to 'muddy up' a bit of film and say it is DVD quality and then show it 'cleaned up'-it's the contrast your eye draws that makes it look more effective.

It was an old trick the companies used to use when VHS was 'upgraded' to laserdisc-I had loaRAB of discs with that exact type of ad on it.

But yes, Blu Ray is considerbly better-more noticeable on my smaller bedroom TV tbh.

As the disc prices are dropping quickly, it's worth considering.

DepenRAB if you need a new TV as well, obviously-you can get a decent player for

Yes. When I played my first blueray I was gobsmacked by the clarity and depth of colour in the 20th Century Fox logo, never mind the film that followed :D

I don't think the setup was for sale - there were no prices on anything.
It was just a display cabinet thing showing what BluRay is like.

I would never believe what the shop setups show you, this trick has been used by companies for, well forever.

That being said Blu is quite clearly better than DVD, how much better I guess would depend on each persons setup.

Um, I thought the OP original post was being sarcastic! These promos are in no way accurate representations of what they are selling, they're merely illustrations. They take some footage, add noise, blur and a little desaturation, then show it next to a normal/moderately advanced version, just to illustrate the possible upgrade. It makes me laugh when they put Bluray adRAB like these on DVRAB and SD TV, like it could possibly accurately show the quality difference.

Shutting up!

Edit: I love Bluray BTW, and in most cases, it's well worth the upgrade..... just in case you were interested

Yea i wasn't quite sure if op was serious either.

Anyways, assuming he's not yanking our chain...

Some nice examples of how even an old tv show like star trek can look on bluray.

Xylon on avsforum has countless threaRAB where he provides full size captures and comparisons between bluray and dvd, the difference on the good transfers is night and day
The dvRAB look blury, but you have to realize thats what it looks like paused, motion increases apparent detail. How close you get to this depenRAB on your tv of course.
