Today in tempe, I was hit on my bicycle by what looked like a teenage boy in a car. I was crossing in a cross walk. I waited till it showed "walk now," and proceeded to look and then go as I always do. Before I knew it I was hit. The boy was turning right on a RED light and did not stop. Me AND my boyfriend where hit however, I was a lot more injured then him. I can barely walk due to my foot and my bike is totaled. The boy has a big indent in his car from me now. I was in shock and my boyfriend called the police. They had no sympathy and simply told me it was my fault as I was "going against traffic." I now have to pay for driving school (as i received a citation) my injuries, my bike, and HIS CAR.

I understand I was going "against traffic," but prior to riding I asked a security or campus police officer what the bike laws were...and he looked funny and did not understand what I meant. I then proceeded to look online and could not find anything regarding which way to ride my bike....so I just looked at what other students were doing (the same as me)

I am a junior at Arizona State University...I am so upset and am still in shock. It just happened tonight and I am in pain. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to AT LEAST not pay for his car, and my bike damage?

Please understand where I am coming from, as I take full responsibility for not fully understanding the Arizona bike laws, but this kid was not only speeding, did not stop for 1 sec. let alone 3 on a red light and took complete guilt before the police arrived.

Your suggestions would mean a lot.
Thank you,

Kristen
