I was completely awake during my colonoscopy O.O

I had a colonoscopy and upper gi endoscopy this morning...and I wasn't too concerned about having it done b/c all the doctors I talked to said that I wouldn't remember a thing or feel anything...BUT...I did...I was completely awake...not even drowsy...and it hurt like frickin hell. I kept telling them it hurt but they didn't say/do anything. I gagged on the endoscope and spit up some bile and everything. It was horrible. I watched the screen as they scoped my bum. The stuff they sprayed in my throat did numb it a bit though...I still felt it but it wasn't as sore as it is now...took like an hour or so for my throat to start hurting bad.

And you know the worst part? I went through all this for nothing, it seems. If I understand it correct, there was no ulcer or anything and the source of the bloody diarrhea was just a damn hemmroid. They took biopsies to check for colitis and celiac disease but I guess they think I just have simple IBS. They gave me more meds though...4 more pills I have to take a day. 23 years old and I have to take 17 prescription pills a day now. They added Carafate twice daily and Bentyl twice daily. I don't know if I'm even going to take them...I'll take them until my follow up next week but I may ask to go off them. The Prevacid too...not like the Prevacid even helps with the indigestion or acid reflux. And I don't really mind having diarrhea every time I eat...cuts back on calories absorbed if the food is floating in the toilet 30 minutes after I eat it.

That same thing happened to my Mother on her last colonoscopy. She'd had many before and was out cold for them. She said it was horrible and she could feel every bend and twist they made. They knew she was awake but said they had given her as much of the "twighlight" sleep medication that they could give her so she suffered in agony through the whole procedure. That was the first time I'd ever heard of anyone being awake for the procedure. Needless to say, I'm in no hurry to schedule my next one;)

Sorry you had to go through that. I hope they find something that helps with your problems.

Best wishes,

JB
