I was bitten by a dog while riding my bicycle?

On Thursday I was riding my mountain bike. Normally I try to ride on the street but this street was unsafe for cycling, so I was on the sidewalk. Ahead of me was this woman walking her dog, which looked like a pit bull, on the sidewalk. I veered over quite a bit onto the grass -- someone's front yard -- and as I drove by, the dog lunged at me and bit me in the leg. (The woman did NOT have a firm grasp of her dog's leash.) I went to the doctor -- the dermatologist down the street from me since I'm laid off and don't have medical insurance -- and the derm. used these things called Steri-Strips to close the wound. The office doesn't have tetanus shots but the dermatologist said that since it wasn't a puncture wound involving metal (e.g., a rusty nail) I should be fine in that respect. She did give me 10 days of antibiotics.

I reported the incident to the police, but I didn't have the prescense of mind to do it immediately when it happened. The only thing I asked the woman was, "Is your dog current with its vaccincations?" and she said, "Of course!"

I was in shock and didn't know what to do, and the woman saw the blood oozing from my leg, staining my sock and shoe, and didn't even act surprised that her dog did that, nor did she inquire if I was okay or not.

I filed a police report an hour later, and of course the lady was long gone. (She disappeared pretty quickly after it happened.)

My question is, should I post signs around the area? I think this woman should be responsible for my medical bills. What should my signs say and how do I post them (I mean, do I nail them to posts, tape them, etc.)??

What should I do? The police are no help.
The police are no help because they didn't see the woman or the dog. Of course I should have phoned them immediately, but I was IN SHOCK.

What should my note say? I should nail them up? Should I go door-to-door?

The lady is responsible for your bills. Recontact the police as they should help as you need to know if the dog was truly vaccinated otherwise you may need rabies shots. I would nail signs any place you can and as many as you can make.

You should have asked her to stay and give her addy and phone #
Talk to the police about what to do - the cops on the beat might know this dog.Yes put a note up with a brief explanation - chances are this dog never gets any fan mail and people will be happy to come for.
