I want to turn off the water supply to my outdoor spigot. The valve is marked O

and S. Is the O for Off or On? I am too lazy and it is too freakin' cold for me to outside and see which direction works!
 
If it's a valve you turn, turn it clockwise till it stops.
If it's a lever valve, turn it 90 degrees whatever way it turns, and that is probably in the direction "S" for Shut. Most lever operated valves will be shut when the lever is at right angles to the body and pipes.
