I want to start Wwarhammer 40K. Where can I learn all the history?

I want to start the tabletop game, but I know what army I want already. What I want to know is what books are there that I can read to learn about everything, like all the history of the Emperor and stuff. There seems to be so many novels, but I read some of them and there's always new things and people I've never heard of.
