I want to start my own pet sitting/dog walking business?

Perhaps business is a hefty word but, I'm 17 years old, majoring in Veterinary Technology next year & highly experienced with animals. I've spent the past 2 years volunterring in a no-kill shelter & would be able to get outstanding refrences from the shelters owner.

I walk many dogs a week, including my own whom are very routy & strong. I have 3 cats, know how to change a litter box like a champ too. I also think the fact that I own rats would be a great asset because many people do have small pets that they can't bring on vacation.

What are some good ways of getting this going? I'm pretty lost as far as prices go, but I do know word of mouth will help, especially if every new pet-owner is told about my services.

Is this idea far fetched? Any ideas, tips or tricks? What would YOU look for in a pet sitter?
I forgot to mention, I'm located in Queens, NY, if that helps any.
Well, I would start this all in August because right now I'm starting a remedial math class for 2 weeks & then right after it's over with, I'll be away for a week & a half. I work 3 days a week; 4PM to 8PM two days a week & 9AM to 1PM. So it'd have to work around that.

Start by getting free business cards from Vista Print (look it up on google) and go for a walk a few mornings in a row. When you see somebody walking a dog, stop and introduce yourself. Explain who you are, your qualifications, and wthat you're doing. Give them a business card, and be friendly and upbeat. In a petsitter, I would check age, qualifications, and personality. You have the age and the qualifications, just add the friendly personality and you're good to go :)

Hope I helped :)

well, first get busniess cards. will this be a full time or a side thing?

i am much younger than you, but this summer i have gotten 270$ petsitting around my nighborhood.

for me it a side thing, so i cant be of much help. but once the word gets around, trust me you will be overwelmed with jobs!
