I have a small patch of land outside my apartment, big enough to plant a few small bushes and trees, and to set up a small table and chairs for lounging in the sun. I want to start a rock garden, and I need some creative suggestions for which types of plants, trees or flowers to plant. Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks Primoa! i live in Newfoundland, an island off the east coast of Newfoundland.
Canada, I mean! lol

I think the best idea is for you to go to a local nursery and talk to the people there but to give you a general idea the best plant types which work in a rock garden are:

* Carpet - plants that grow flat to the ground, or almost flat. Also known as a mat.
* Spreader - basically like a taller version of a carpet. These plants often have a cascading style when grown on a wall or at the edge of a container.
* Tuft - also known as a mound or clump. Stems tend to arise from a central point, usually with an upright habit.
* Cushion - a domed-shape habit, like a little round pillow.
* Rosette - leaves are joined together at a central point, radiating like the spokes on a wheel. Hen-and-chicks are a classic example.
* Subshrub - basically, low-growing shrubs. Perennials with a woody base.

It all depends on which part of the country you live in, Sue.......this will determine what kind of plants will survive in your garden.

I've starred this in the hopes that one of my contacts has a green thumb.

Here in Orlando, pretty much anything will burn in the sun........so having a rock garden of my own would take a miracle & someone who really knows what they're doing.

Edit:
Didn't know you were way up there in Canada, Sue!
I suppose this means you're going to have to get bulb-type plants that grow back in the summer.......the kind that can survive under the frozen earth.
