I am wondering how hard is it to grow vegetables outside? Do I need to grow them inside, or in a green house first? Or do I plant them from seed into the ground? LOL..I need help! I know absolutely NOTHING about growing a veggie garden!!! Any tips or pointers would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! What kinds of vegetables would you recommend in a cooler climate? (I live in Newfoundland, an island of the north east coast of Canada.) Thanks!

I live in Pa. Early in the spring while it is still cool we plant onion sets, lettuce seed, pea seeds, carrots from seed. You can plant any kind of salad greens from seed. Then when the danger of frost is over we go to the greenhouse and buy tomato plants, pepper plants. I dont know about Newfoundland. Maybe go to a local nursery and ask them.

There are a lot of vegetables that are fairly easy to grow. Lima beans, string beans, and peas are good ones to start with. You could also try broccoli or cauliflower. Squash and zucchini are exceptionally easy to grow. Any of these can be started from seeds.

If you are interested in growing strawberries or onions buying the plants is the most effective direction to take.

Same thing for tomatoes. I live in a cooler climate as well and I buy the plants at a local greenhouse. Otherwise, I have had difficulty with them ripening before frost.

Make sure your vegetable plants have rich, nutritious soil too. You might want to consider some fertilizer, Animal manure works wonders.

Hope this helps!

Why don't you start with something fairly easy like tomatoes and basil. Start them as seedling inside and when they are more mature and the weather is warm outside you can transplant them. When you buy seeds the packet will have a lot of information on them to help you out. There are also a ton of book, web pages, people at the hardware store that can help you as you go. It never hurts to try other things besides the basics. Is there something you love to eat and will use a lot? Go for it! Any kind of squash is usually pretty easy to grow. Good luck.
