I want to have a showing of a movie which I purchased, but don't have the public showing rights. My dorm starts a check-in procedure in which you have to live in the dorm or be checked in my somebody who does live in the dorm at midnight. Is my dorm lounge still considered a "public place" if I wait until after midnight?

Also, what are some other ways I can avoid the copyright laws and show a movie in the lounge?

No -- your dorm isn't considered public EVER because it's not. Those are your roommates. They fall under friends and family. Just don't charge for VIEWING it, is all. Charge for a seat rental if you like, but not for viewing the movie.

my brother was an ra for 2 years and he would borrow the projector and have little movie nights in the dorms common area. being semi-private, ie not on the internet and your friends/their friends only your not going to get in trouble. its not legal but who's ever going to say anything.
