I want to receive radio waves from my freinds on his pocket.?

he is in my city, we want to experiment about this, what i want is mic and radio transmitter of it, which i can receive... but he is a reporter, he has to travel a lot...what is limit of distance for receiving radio signals?
 
Yes, you can built a little transmitter/receiver, but it'd be easier to just buy a pair of walkie-talkies.
The distance limit on a hobby kit transceiver is about 1/4 mile.
