I want to learn to play the violin?

Next year the new music teacher coming won't allow guitar so I am thinking of playing the violin. I've played guitar for 3 years and it seems that my ability to play is surpassing my ability to sightread. (I play very skillfully but I can't read music well.) I have done ear training for about 3 years and I can tune an instrument without a tuner. But I am not sure if I can gain the amount of skill needed to get into music class for the next school year. My friend says violin is very hard. But I feel like I really want to learn. So how long do I have to learn untill I can play at an average level? May I be able to make it into the music class next year? (I have about 7 months) Any violin brands suggestions? Practice times? Help??? o_o
