Years ago, I read one of a series of sci-fi books. The basic premise was the narrator wakes up in a world that is populated by people from all times and places... there are Vikings, Americans, etc.

The world is a long river with a little enclaves along it where different groups live.

There are large mushroom shaped rocks that provide food at intervals.

And when you die, the narrator discovers that you are held in some sort of suspended animation before reappearing in another of the little enclaves along the river.

It was a fantastically weird book, and I read it when I was about 13, so I am sure I am missing any deeper subplots. I would love to discover the author or title so that I can reread this book!

It's a series of books by Philip José Farmer.

The first one's called "To Your Scattered Bodies Go" and the second one's called "The Fabulous Riverboat".

Hope this helps.
