I want to go to UCLA Arts, but my cumulative GPA was kind of low (like less than 3.0)?

If I have make an outstanding portfolio this summer, do I have a chance? My cumulative gpa is less than 3.0, but my junior year gpa was 3.3. Do I have a chance of getting in?

At UCLA you always have a chance, getting in is a crapshoot. While your chance isn't great, if you have a good backstory, add diversity, or something special, you definitely have a chance. I know they have admitted kids with low B averages because of their backstory. (And I know kids that got into Harvard, but not UCLA.)

But you have to consider -- will you be ready for UCLA? Most of the kids UCLA admits have high gpas and SAT scores. The kids they admit that have low gpas and a not so great high school education have problems and a lot of stress, and I feel the support UCLA gives them is really lacking. Do you want to be in that position? The work is quite a bump up from high school. I guess you are an artist, how much time will you get to work on your art -- or will all your time be taken up with trying to pass academics? You really should see if you can bump up that gpa! Take a class on writing the personal statement, it's very important.

Have you looked at community college and transferring after 2 years? While it is not guaranteed that you will be able to transfer through special programs (it is to some UCs), you have priority, so a very good chance at UCLA. You might want to look at the CalState schools too. Remember, if you don't get into UCLA, there are many options!

Good luck!
