I want to go to medical school but didn't apply to the pre-med program at my university?

I'm going to be a freshmen a the University of Pittsburgh, main campus, in the fall. My major is biology. I realize that you do not need to be in a pre-med program to be accepted to medical school, but I feel that it would be more adventitious to have access to the advisors. Can I still apply to the pre-med program?

Also, would it benefit me more to major in anthropology rather than biology to stand out to medical schools? I would much prefer anthropology, but I've always been told that bio and chem are good "solid" undergrad majors for those planning on medical school.

You should contact the school and see if admission is still possible. You might need to wait a semester, but it should be fine.

As far as your major goes, you don't need to major in the sciences. If anthropology is what interests, you, go for it! Just make sure you're taking the science courses that are pre-reqs for most med schools. The pre-med advisers should be able to help you figure out which ones you need. Good luck!
