I want to do an MA in History. Do you think I'm too old?

I'm 24 years old and I want to do an MA in History from the Open University? However, I'm not sure I feel too old to be studying. And is the OU a recognisable university? I work part-time so distant learning would suit me plus I don't intend to use my MA for my career because I am happy with what I earn. I just want to do it for personal development. And my parents and a few others are dead against it saying I should do something in finance. So I have no support and I'm not sure whether I should do it or not.

An MA is an MA so I'm fairly sure the Open University course would be recognised. It's great that you want do do it for your own sake rather than looking at it as a possible career move. When I was your age I wanted to go into higher education but didn't want the debt that would come with it. I regret that now but am planning soon to do an Open University degree course. I'm 44 years old. It's something I want to do for myself and I will because I do not want my regret to continue.
It's your life therefore it's up to you to choose how to live it.
Good luck.

I did my Masters when I was 40! I'm working on my Doctorate now!

You're never too old!

I had bad experiences with the OU, I found them expensive and incompetent, they enrolled me on the wrong code, sent me the wrong information, and were never available when I needed them. So I personally wouldn't recommend them, but I'm sure others would have different tales to tell. Lot's of Universities now do part-time and distance learning MAs, so shop around.

The open university is basically designed around people in your position isn't it? You should be able to work part time and do all of your studies in history. If you followed your family's advice and di somethign you weren't really interested in, then you probably woulsn't be commited enough to finishing it. I think oyu should go for your MA in history - 24 is definitely not too old.

personally, the thought of getting a full degree for nothing other than personal experience is not something i'd do, but i commend you for it.

you are absolutely not to old. i started my ma at 27 and was one of the youngest in the program. people go back to school at all different ages, even 87...go for it.

as for the university, no clue. sorry.
