a diesel would not be to bad if, you only travel short miles. but diesel is more expensive. it all depends really on what you like. diesel prices will always be higher.

I do not do many mileage, may be 20-30 mile / week, but as children grow up, it may be required to do more mileage. what would be cheaper to run? People says, diesel is for regular use for long mileage, is it true? or it can be used for short mileage as well.

diesel gives you more mpg but costs more to service and repair and its more expensive at the pumps

petrol gives you less mpg but costs less to service and repair and its cheaper at the pumps to fill it up,

thats the advantage and disadvantage of petrol and diesel,

its only you that can choose
