I want to buy an Unlocked Sidekick lx, but keep it for tmobile?

I want to buy an unlocked sidekick lx off ebay, but I want to keep it for tmobile.
But I'm scared that if I buy it off ebay, it may not be unlocked even though it says it is.
And if it isn't, will I still need to unlock it to use it for tmobile?
And if so, how so I unlock it at all?
