I want to buy a laptop from bestbuy but it came with vista

Buy a laptop built to your specs. Off the shelf laptops aren't near as good, and may not include near as good of a warranty
 
No, you want Vista. Forget about XP. If that's what it came with, then stay with it. You take that license off and you may need to pay for it again in the future. First see if the unit dies within the warranty period because if it does you may have to pay for a new license. May. I want to see how Dell, HP and IBM handle OEM licenses - that was a major headache for MS. So if your Dell dies you may have to buy a new license. Then you can decide to install XP instead. Just make sure that it is a retail license, though. Then you will be able to transfer it to another machine. You won't be able to do that with Vista. (afaik).
 
Retail licenses of Vista are still transferable to 5 different motherboards (1 at a time though). This allows enthusiasts who build a PC, upgrade the video card a year later, then build a PC a year after that to be ok. By the time they've gone through 5 motherboards the next Windows will have been out for a while. Even enthusiasts won't go through 5 motherboards in less than 5 years. Also, after the 5th, they'll let you transfer anyways if you call them and say a PC died on you, just like with XP and Vista OEM copies, if you say your PC died they'll just allow you to transfer even if they're not supposed to.
 
That's fucking bullshit though because Motherboards also take a shit on you and need to be replaced early and why should we have to buy an upgrade as soon as that 5th year come up by their estimate?

They should have made it for at least 10 motherboards, because that's fucking bullshit, especially considering the license only really works on one machine at a time.
 
i actually played around with vista a little bit today and i thought the user interface was a lot better. they had all these little things that they obviously stole from mac, like revolving windows, and gadgets. instantaneous search results were alright, and some other little things too. i dont see the need to upgrade to these but all in all i thought they were alright
 
I happened to go to BestBuy today before they opened (thought it was 10 instead of 11) and they were handing out vouchers for the laptop in the flyer. They were selling 8 Toshiba laptops with Vista preinstalled for $250 w/a DSL/Cable signup or $400 just for the laptop.

It was a Celeron so I doubt it was any good at anything else except internet once Vista was on there.
 
I don't know about you but the average upgrade cycle for a new box is 3-4 years. how many motherboards have you gone through since XP came out? more than 5? I've had 2. Even enthusiasts won't go through more than 1 motherboard a year and as I said earlier, if you call in and tell them your motherboard died they'll let you activate past the 5 times.
 
so I bought the laptop that is loaded with vista and I must say vista is not as bad as I thought it would be, my computer runs pretty fast. I use a lot of high end 3d programs and I notice no performance differences using vista over xp, which I guess it's a good thing and it does look pretty damn good compare to xp.
