I want to buy a crap car and fix it up and eventually sell it?

goood idead. You get alot of money doing houses up and selling them on. Its a good idea and youd probably get more of a profit margin than from houses being in the current situation of propert and the credit crunch. Youd get quite a bit if you know where to get good deals for the car parts...
 
before you buy any crappy car, look at the battery, and the engine. if the battery is crusted over you can't fix the car. if the engine is dented you can't either-unless you want o spend a ton of money. also, make sre you get the title before you pay money. if all that is in order, go to a auto repair shop and ask for advice on what to buy to fix your car yourself (or just have them do it).
