i want a bike GPS but i don't know if i need to pay for service?

i have a GPS picked out for my bike but a friend told me i need to pay for service like a cell phone and i never thought that was true so do i need to pay to use it or is it free to use after i get it? thank you to anyone who helps. i appreciate it.

no you dont. just plug it into a computed occasionally and buy updates for it. There are no monthly payments just turn it on and go.

All standard GPS units are free after you purchase. The only time I've ever seen a monthly fee is if you want to subscribe to real time traffic updates or something, which I don't think you are talking about.
