I use a Nikon F501/N2020 Manual SLR and I'm having trouble with taking photos with it?

It's pretty old, my mom used it back when I wasn't even born yet, I had it repaired recently and I just got it back last night. I put 100 ASA film in it, and I believe that I have all the necessary settings in place:

Exposure: 0
ISO: 100
Shutter speed: 125

I've been toggling the lens, and I like handling it manually instead of using the S and C settings on a dial in the front of the body because that way I get more freedom to style my shots, but there's one problem:

I set the shutter release button on S and I press it, but it doesn't take a picture. I took a look inside the viewfinder thingy and noticed that red dots and arrows light up inside, and I only end up taking a picture whenever these lights turn green.

I don't know if I should try to be a little more patient, but to take a single picture I end up changing all my custom settings to completely different settings until I see that little green dot inside the viewfinder.

I want to be able to take photographs with freedom, and not having to wait for the green dot to show up every time I try to take a picture. Please help :)
