I transplanted two 8 feet tall date palm trees in July 2011, as yet new leaves have not emerged. One tree has?

lost all its old leaves and the other is now losing three leaves of the old 8 leaves. The trunks look ok. I watered these trees every day for the first month after the transplant and then on I have been watering the trees once a week and applying NPK fertilizer after every three months. Please tell me if the trees are alive and when are new leaves expected to emerge ?? I live in Pakistan
