Because if Verizon (arguably the best carrier) got the iphone (arguably best phone) then it would basically annahialate the competition. Now not saying the new droid is bad, I have one and it's got great potential. I'm just saying that this would make sense why AT&T is willing to spend MEGA bucks to keep the iphone exclusive to them.
