...english. Is this weird? I am from the USA. I know at first glance you might say "Why would they speak english? Why don't you learn their language if you have a problem?" But hear me out.
I am a prof at a design school. There are about 7 other people in the department that are present at our staff meetings. All of them speak english. I speak their language pretty poorly. I am still learning it but it takes time. Staff meetings are important. They know I don't understand a thing. The meetings are about 3 hours long. I would never expect them to hold the entire meeting in english (lots of it is specific to things I am not involved with), but certain things which are particularly important to me might be said in english I think. I think it is bizarre. They want me there to bring something special to their department because I am from the USA and can help the students with English and bring new ideas to the department. But I am pretty much left out because I can't understand anything. So it is a bit pointless. Do you think it is weird that no one speaks english at all? I feel like I am on the moon.
Yes eRock I am in their country. But if they want a foreign teacher to be a part of their school then they should find a way to communicate in certain situations don't you think?
Whitehat- that is my point! if anything IMPORTANT is said then they should make sure I catch it. That's all I want. Just a bit of english here and there when they are talking about something directly important to my class or incredibly important to me.
