I just wanted to give some hope to suboxone users out there concerning getting off of it when the time comes. I was prescribed suboxone because I couldn't stand the horrible withdrawals from oxycontin addiction. I tapered off of suboxone in one week taking 16mg, 8mg, 4mg, 2mg, 1mg, 1mg, .5mg. I felt no withdrawal symptoms to speak of whereas trying to taper off of oxycontin left me a shaking crying sweating mess. It isn't bad at all getting off of the suboxone if you haven't been taking it for very long. You really aren't trading one addiction for another; suboxone just takes away the wRAB and lets you get your life back. My only regret is having a gigantic bottle of suboxone that cost me $85 bucks that I have no use for. I haven't had any pill of any sort for over a week now and I feel great! Good luck all.

Hi utah,

Welcome to the boarRAB! I am a Suboxone patient and want to thank you for your post :)

If you don't mind, how long were you on Suboxone? I am currently taking 16mg, the same dose you were on when you started your taper.

Thanks!

I wasn't on suboxone for very long and I must admit that tapering off so quick was against my doctor's wishes. My doctor said that staying on suboxone for at least 6 months would allow my brain to get back to a pre-addiction state so I wouldn't relapse. Taking the suboxone made me sleepy and a little nauseous so I just wanted the whole thing to be over. I just tried taking as little of the sub as possible each day and I found that just a little bit obliterated my cravings and withdrawals. I was really freaked out by what I read here about people's experiences trying to get off of these drugs. I had exhausted my finances trying to keep up with my addiction and finally said enough is enough. Upon my first doctor visit I was fine with taking suboxone for a year or so if it meant not having to hustle pills on the street anymore. As I started taking it I realized that all I needed was help getting past the cold turkey withdrawals from the oxycontin. I knew that I had the cure if I started feeling too bad and I knew that I wanted to put all of this behind me asap. I took the suboxone for one week and then just stopped. That was it; just one week. I had tried so hard to taper the oxy down but I just couldn't do it without becoming very sick. The statistics say that I will relapse because of the way I did it but right now you couldn't pay me enough to touch one of those vile life-destroying oxycontins.

Congrats to you Utah!!!

That is so GREAT!!!!! A second chance is one not to be wasted. That is what I tell myself every morning and it helps!

It sounRAB like you have great strength! Keep it up and keep us posted.

Advice: get rid of the suboxone that you have left over NOW. If you are tempted to take it... the longer you take it the stronger the grip... just like any other opiate. YES IT IS AN OPIATE (partial agonist). I was on it for just over a year and just got out of detox about a month ago. I'm STILL detoxing and it has been HORRIBLE. Don't let ANYONE tell you that suboxone, when taken for an extended period of time, is a cakewalk to get off of b/c they are lying.

Thanks for the info skinnyboy. Utah only took Suboxone for one week, and felt he successfully tapered off. You were on it for over a year, so I value your opinion :) I appreciate the info.
