I recently bought a 1999 Kawasaki 1100 STX Jet Ski, need some help!?

The jet ski doesn't turn on, so i have to hook it up to a jump starter. When I hook it up, the screen turns on. When I turn the key and push the starter button, it cranks and sounds like gun shots, is this normal? One of the times I tried cranking it, it turned on for just a second, then shut off. Whats wrong here?
