...was a diary...? ...it was a diary of a French woman who married an English painter and moved to his estate in UK. The other characteristic detail is that they bought an island and lived on that island alone. The island was on the lake. It didn't appear to be work of fiction, but rather of documentary character. Grateful for any hints because I cant find it...
