I put all of my music from my sony vaio onto an external hard drive, how do I get it on

my hp laptop? I have Windows 7 on my new laptop and I've been trying to transfer my music from my old laptop to the new one. I've gotten to the point to where my media center will play the music as long as the hard drive is still hooked up. Once I disconnect the hard drive media center tells me the files have been removed or unavailable. How do I fix this and just get the music on my computer regardless if the hard drive is hooked up?
