I Prefer Musicians Who Are Drug Addicts

agreed

certain drugs i feel get rid of a certain level of self consciousness and allow music to flow a bit more freely. so...the talent was there the whole time. a lot of people think smoking bud allows them to be more creative. for me, i've noticed when playing guitar after smoking i'm a little less worried about playing something revolutionary and totally original and i will just play what sounRAB good to play.

for the guys on the harder stuff...i think they are tortured and produce good stuff because it clicks with us on a very emotional level that only someone experiencing such an extreme can articulate, and then drugs just happen to be an unfortunate added circumstance. it is not that the drugs are helping. there are plenty of banRAB with their merabers on something who don't produce anything worthwhile at all.

I'm glad someone else thinks so...honestly if Soundgarden had continued I think that album was hinting at some very melodic softer stuff, but with their signature dark edge. I would have listened to it.

Yeah, I really dig some of the effects they were getting into with the vocals. And songs like "Zero Chance", "Tighter and Tighter", "Applebite" and "Boot Camp" are some of their best ever, and yet, if you weren't familiar with the album, you probably wouldn't have even heard them.

There are enough clean musicians for me to not to prefer drug addicts:

half of the ramones
fugazi
shellac

On the other hand there is also a lot of terrible music probably inspired by coke-the eagles, duran duran, robert palmer, etc.

...actually there is enough musicians that prove and disprove that drugs=genius, that it's pretty irrelevant. I still wish Aerosmith was on drugs though.

getting into sensitive territory, i'm sure. drugs should never be underestimated.

that being said i totally support trying a psychedelic once in your life...it's like losing your virginity...something you just have to experience. putting legality and taboo aside, being intelligent creatures that can appreciate altering the way our brains perceive reality is an important way to appreciate and respect both the world we think we know and how little that actually is in the grand scheme of things.

I don't like musicians on drugs cause they are usually better, I just like the very raw sound that unprofessionalism creates. Like compare Frusciante's solo albums done while messed up on drugs, and see the clean albums he made after... I'll choose chaotic dirty sounRAB every time.

Didn't vote, as it's not much of a general thing... A talentless bloke will remain talentless, drugs or no drugs.

this!

I prefer great music and I could care less if they are blitzed making it... sometimes I'm blitzed enjoying it so who am I to judge.

i never considered the guys from Soundgarden to be drug addicts, at least not in the same league as the junkies of the day. as for Down on the Upside, it's ok, but really it was going through the motions and a bit of a rehash of Superunkown. Applebite, Overfloater, and Never the Machine Forever are ace though, especially NtMF.

who are your favorite artists with drug problems?

what do you think it is about the creative mind that links so intrinsically to addiction?

I don't like it when they are drug addicts because they usually have lots of problems and die 30 years younger ;).

And also, take note many banRAB do drugs today, and a lot of them are horrible as well.
