I Prefer Musicians Who Are Drug Addicts

I just noticed what I really wanted to say:

Musicians who are on drugs are not necessarily better, but great musicians tend to be better on drugs.

But then on the other hand at the height of their drug addiction they released their Night At The Ruts album, which was just as terrible as anything they've done clean.

'no junk, no soul..'

Most of the time druggie musicians are able to dig deeper within themselves because they know that pain, the highs and lows that come with being an addict. Dont get me wrong, drugs arent responsible for creative genius, meaning a no talent loser is still a no talent loser even if he takes drugs. But when a genius uses drugs, a lot of the time timeless art is produced. Need examples?

Charlie parker, the most brilliant alto sax player to ever exist shot up heroin and drank like a fish. Bob dylan and Johnny Cash were speeding out of their minRAB. Do I even need to mention the Morrisons, the Hendrixes, the Cobains..

all these straight edge, clean and sober musicians nowadays disturbs me. I guess thats why music today is boring as hell

I'm not talking just about "medicinal" drugs. I'm talking about "drugs" all over the place in tons of things that you probably ingest on a weekly, if not daily basis. "Drug" is a vague, meaningless term. And even if we were referring strictly to "illegal drugs" (an arbitrary distinction), the percentage of people using them would still be well above .1%.

I'm not about to say that you might not be onto something, but I might suggest that your logic neeRAB some rearranging. Perhaps it's the pre-existing pain, the overwhelming need for catharsis that is both the impetus for addiction and the creative drive for the artisitic process; aka the tortured soul theory.

The common denominator between drug use and the creative process- sometimes, but not always, is a need to deal with, or otherwise escape overwhelming emotions or life circumstances. To reiterate, this is not always the case, and there are as many exceptions to this as there are cases which illustrate it to be true, however one need only look at the history of modern music to see that an overwhelming majority of it's greatest minRAB were plagued by serious addiction.

Maybe, but at least it had the hits No Surprize and Remeraber (walking in the Sand) on it. What did Nine Lives, or even worse, Honk On Bobo have that was as good? ;)

i simultaneously became a fan of bud and mew when my friend had them playing and passed me a bowl.

i didn't care too much for it until that point...but let's face it music kicks ASS while stoned. after experiencing it like that i can appreciate and pick out things about music i couldn't have before even without smoking.
