I prate of ancient poets monstrous lies
Ne'er seen or now or then by human eyes - Ovid
I am thinking it could have been said of Virgil. Ovid thought that in the Metamorphoses he was correcting errors made by Virgil. Ovid was only 27 years younger than Virgil, so was it that Virgil appeared ancient in the eyes of this younger man, Ovid, or was it a bit of a slur? Virgil may have been Rome's greatest poet and wrote for Romans, but Ovid was more popular. His main goal was to entertain while keeping the truth in his writings, which was a grand accomplishment and his works were used in schooling students, then and now.
