I picked up this guitar book and it says to practice th3 I IV V twelve bar blues...

generally 12 bar blues in A goes like this:

D)-2-2-4-4-2-2-4-4-5-5-4-2-
A)-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-

and repeat.

mess around with it a bit it gives a you a good feel for a solid blues rhythm. its also good bc you can play with a much more experienced player and he can easily solo over this rhythm.

oh and also after a couple bars of that try moving it up and down on the strings and just get a good rhythm down.
 
...pattern.It says the root is A? A is the 1st and D is the 4th and E is the 5th and i know that part but when you play a I IV V chord progresion how many strums do you play? and what is the twelve bar blues pattern?
 
There is no set strumming pattern, 12 bar blues can be played many ways, including finger picking.

The 145 (I IV V) 12 bar pattern in A is:

A A A A (4 bars)

D D A A (4 bars)

E D A A (4 bars)
