I often hear people say "you'd be a fool to represent yourself in court, you need...

...a lawyer!"? Wouldn't judges decide the case based on its CONTENT,
not on whose arguing the case?

I mean, just because lawyers have been to law school doesn't mean they're smart.
I know lots of college graduates who are dumbasses.

What's so important about having a lawyer to represent you?

they may be dumbasses, but how about the area in which they got their degree?

do you know all the rules of law? plus a lawyer is someone else on YOUR side. why would anyone believe a suspected criminal. i'd love to see you get in trouble and try to defend yourself.

even most lawyers don't defend themselves

Not only are litigation lawyers trained in law, procedure and presentation styles, they are also familiar with all of the maneuvering and posturing that goes into a case. But more importantly, they also have malpractice insurance that can protect the client if the attorney's negligence blows the case.

If you mess it up yourself, you have nobody to blame but yourself.

As a licensed attorney, I would *always" hire an attorney to bring or defend a lawsuit on my behalf, just as I hire one who knows about property law for my own real estate, probate law for my own wills and trusts, etc.
