i need to replace the carb on my 78 chevy 4x4. Is it true that I can't put anything

You can put many different carbs on your truck. Depends on what you are looking for like performance, gas mileage or what. You will find passing an emission test much easier with the original Quadra-Jet. It is a excellent carb for all around performance.
 
but a quadraJet on it? I also found an edelbrock performer intake with Qjet carb on craigslist, I am just getting started on my new hobby, any idea if performer will be legal on my truck in california?
 
If my memory serves me right a quadrajet has 2 large and 2 small barrels and other carbs have the same size barrels so you would need to change the manifold also.
