I need to make a big book for a class...is it ok to use a calendar and write a story

using Blues Clues? My early childhood class requires me to create a big book. Our instructor suggested using a calendar because of the easy use of the pictures. I picked up a Blues Clues calendar and a Backyardigans calendar. Would it be a copyright issue to write a story with those characters in it? If so, how could I go about getting permission? Or should I just change the names of the characters and their "title"? I did purchase the calendar, so if I am correct the pictures are mine to use however I wish. I will not be reselling this big book, but I may read it to my preschoolers. Thank you in advance for the help!
