I need to know how to remove cellofane from the surface of an acrylic painting ?

My wife inherited a painting after her mother passed away. In order to move it from her house to ours I would have to put it in the bed of my pick up truck. I wanted to protect it so I wrapped it in cellofane (thinking that it would work just like shrink wrap) then I covered the whole thing with towels. Well, it was particularly hot that day and I now know that acrylics soften in the heat. Pieces of plastic stuck to the painting and now that it's cooled I can pick it off but it's very tedious. Does anyone know any methods that I could try that won't damage my painting?
