i guess what im asking is what settings do you usually use to get an awesome shot?

my shots look like they are in focus through the lcd, and its usually on auto focus. whenever i look at it on a computer my pics are grainy and somewhat in focus.
i love photography but im feeling like its a loss cause =(
help!
thanks =)

If you're going to use program or auto-mode, try it in shutter speed priority at 1/60 of a second at least. It will help make sure your pics are not blurry from camera movement.
For graininess you need to change the ISO rating form auto to 40 or maybe 200. It sounds like your camera is shooting at 800 or higher. Always use your flash.

For 90% of my pictures I use Aperture Priority (Av) set the aperture for the depth of field I want and the camera will select the appropriate shutter speed, just check that it doesn't get too slow for hand holding in dim light.

To guarantee a perfect exposure every-time use the menus to enable the Histogram on picture review. Then just shoot to the Histogram. You want the 'hump' of pixels to be as close to the left hand side as you can without actually touching it for starters (there are things you can do to fine tune it, but this general setting will be pretty close). Use the exposure compensation adjustment to move the Histogram left or right.
