Hello everyone. Around a month ago, I developed some severely chapped lips. I told my doctor about it and she instructed me to use Carmex. I did this. Soon enough, my lips were far worse. I know have one medium sized crack in my lower lip and several minor cracks everywhere else on my lips.

My lips are so chapped that the skin below my bottom lip looks like it is a part of my lip. It was the same way on my upper lip but that has gotten better.

I often have excruciating pain in my lips now. I believe that I am dealing with an infection or something. I can't stand most lip balms because they irritate my lips beyond belief. The Carmex is one that I used to love but now hate.

Only the petroleum based lip balms help any. I have to use pure petroleum jelly with no scents or additives. Aloe Vera does seem to help if it is corabined with the petroleum jelly.

However, the petroleum jelly only makes it worse when I am eating or something because it gets in my mouth and tastes disgusting.

Anyway, I am going to go back to my doctor this week and demand to have something done about my lips. This is not a beauty concern but a health concern. I suffer from frequent skin problems anyway. I definitely do not need to have severely damaged lips or an infection.

Anyway, I am a fairly active person so I have to protect my lips as well as heal them and I live in a very cold environment. If anyone has some tips, I'd appreciate it. Obviously I will be seeing my doctor soon.

Just an update. I visited my neigrabroador earlier and he gave me some Eucerin Advanced Healing balm that he got from being in a hospital a while back. I have been using it and it makes my lips feel soo much better! I am so happy that I found more stuff that works!

Oh and yes, this stuff is made of petrolatum (petroleum jelly to be simple).

Thanks!

wwwgirl,
I'm so glad to see that someone came to the board to discuss the topic you're having a problem with.
I'm not happy you have this particular problem, but I'm glad to learn something from what you're going through so I can help someone else who has the same thing.

My daughter who's 26 suffers with the same problem and everything she's tried over the counter doesn't seem to work for her.
I want a cure for her, but she's happy just to find a product that will take away the discomfort for the moment.

I can't imagine the pain having a deep crack in the lip, because anything that's salty or acidic will burn it horribly. My daughter has mentioned how miserable it feels when it goes through the cycles of cracking and drying up and then the process starting all over again.. she doesn't have any other skin conditions as far as I know, only the lip problem.

She's horrible about going to the doctor, so I can't get her there to find out what's causing it and if there's a permanent cure for it.

Thank you SO much for your help. You have NO idea how much you've helped someone.

Let us know if you find out what causes this.

This way I can tell her I spoke directly with someone who has the same thing and got it treated.

I'm glad you have found relief. My son is a professional trumpet player and won't ever use carmex as it breaks down the lip tissue as it contains camphor.

This is not for everyone-and probably not for you as bad as your lips were. I put metholatum on my lips when they get cracked. I only put it on at night and by morning they are much better. Just don't lick them after you put it on1

I think its very nice way to treat the chapped lips with simple petroleum jelly,It will soften and very good feeling treatment.Good information to share and thanks.
