I need some photoshop help?!?

i opened my photoshop elements 6 and im trying to make a t shirt design using text,but the color of my text is staying grey, i put the color on default but idk its not changing from grey when i click on like blue or pink or anything. anyone know how i can fix it?
 
"Your color mode might be set to GrayScale. Go to Image -> Mode and make sure that it is checked to at least RGB.
