I need some help with Photoshop. Does anyone know anything on layer masks?

So I have a layer mask on a smart object and I made a selection. But when I try and fill the selection directly in the mask with the paint bucket, instead of the black fill that I want, everything that was supposed to be filled just ends up deleted (The checkerboard thing that shows up when nothing is there) Help?
 
if you are masking you have to have something to mask, so make sure you have a picture somewhere in the layer first, and the transparency is not set to 0
