Hello all. I am here for some advice or some ideas for my mom. She is in so much pain and it is becoming unbearable. She is not exactly sure what is wrong with her back and each doctor she visits tells her something different. At this point she is fed up and not seeing doctors anymore. The main consensus is that she has "disc problems" (not necessarily a slipped disc). This in turn makes her LEGS hurt horribly; her back doesn't even hurt. The pain is mainly in her right leg from the hip down to the knee. Her left leg usually does not hurt, but when it does it is MUCH worse than the right leg. They usually hurt everyday, all day. Some days are worse than others. They will especially hurt after she has done a lot of walking or stooping down. She can't even get down on her knees or she knows her legs will hurt really bad after. The pain is not there while she is doing these activities, but after.

Pain medications do little and she usually ices her leg for some reprieve from the pain. She walks really slowly and bow-leged. She takes a long time to sit and stand. She has to adjust how she sits, or it hurts.

She has seen chiropractors and basically any kind of doctor you can imagine. She has had her back aligned and has had a small back surgery where the nerves were moved or rearranged to allow for more room for them. Nothing has helped. She is basically facing major back surgery, but is afraid this will make things worse for her. Her worst fear is that after back surgery her back will hurt along with her legs.

Has anyone on this board had anything similar? What did you do for it? Is she overlooking some other kind of treatment? If you have had major back surgery, how successful was it?? Any kind of advice or experience shared would be much appreciated!!

sorry for what your mom is dealing with, and you too. just what does her MRI say about her back? what does or does not actually show up on the MRI would really dictate what the best move actually is here. have they ever actually MRIed her hip area? sometimes a hip being not aligned right and sitting in that socket the wrong way will bring on pain and symptoms to both legs, just because it sets everything "off' a bit the way the bones sit inthe joint sockets. this just in and of itself can casue some pretty significant pain and other problems too.

one thing your mom can do while she is waiting to really find out just what IS her main pain generator and what to do there,is seek out a good pain management clinic. it just sounRAB like she is really suffering with this and none of her docs appear to really understand what the source of her pain actually is yet? at least a good PM would be able to help ease her suffering til her docs decide what to do here. my PM really has been a goRABend for me and my pain. a good PM can do certain injection procedures too to not only help alleviate her pain, but to also better define the actual pain source for her too.

if she has had a recent MRI,if you could get a hold of it and at least type out just what showed up in the very end summary of that report,it would really help us to be able to help you/her. i really do hope they can find out just what the actual problem is and help her. suffering with any pain just sucks, alot. marcia

I appreciate your response. My mom said that her MRI recorRAB indicated "disc problems". She does not recall the technical terms for that. She also said that she has seen a pain management center. She said they did nothing for her. They were, apparently, more concerned with getting as many patients in as possible. She has had steroid shots, but they did nothing. Any more ideas or suggestions?? I just want her pain to be eased.

You need to make an appointment with a Neurosurgeon and take the films on your visit.

Hi and merry christmas, just wanted to share something that helped my back, prednisone,it was called the medrol pak,and it did more for me than any narcotic ,steroid shot, and all that other stuff,dr says its temporary, but its great to have some pain relief so you can think with a clear head when deciding on which road to take with back treatments,if not prednisone maybe some other anti inflammory so she can get some relief, how sweet you are to be thinking of your mom, shes a lucky woman.hope you find the help you need. marywoo

How long did it take to get relief from Medrol. I started last night (herniated disks & annular fissure)and don't know what to expect. Slept ok..woke up a lot once sweating.
