ok, i have a yamaha xt125, 1982... it will kick over but will not stay running. it has spark, compression, i cleaned the whole carb out 3 times with carb cleaner and a wire brush... the lights work and horn and everyhting else, but when i kick start it, it will just die out or backfire... i had it running before for about 1 minute and hit the throttle and killed it... i have no clue whats wrong with it. please help! i also just put a new spark plug in..

Clean the carburetor again.
Remove the pilot jet and hold it up to the light - you should be able to see through it.
If not, clean it until you can.

if its two stroke the check the oil

when i got my 1988 Yamaha 175 dt the engine will, start, run then die and then it was imposable to start after that

after fiddling with the thing for a good 20 minutes i decided to check the oil with the dip stick, the oil looked just fine but when i took off the drain plug the oil had water in it from the condensation after sitting for so long

you can tell if the oil has water in it because the oil will be gray or frothy

to fix this just drain out the bad oil and flush it out with a few bottles of oil

or the points can be dirty
clean with a peace of paper or thin cardboard
