I am in the process of looking for a vehicle that provides a smooth ride for my newborn. I dont like SUV's and I cant really afford a new truck. I have been looking at the Cadillac CTS...used of course...and I have fallen in love! HOWEVER, I have talked to some people that say they always break down and are super expensive to fix. And then Ive talked to other people who have driven them all thier life and never had a problem and love them. Im confused. I know any car can break down, but can anyone share thier experience with me about em. Are they good cars and am I making a good choice?

Safety-wise, I would say no. I rented a Cadillac CTS once and drove it for a few days in wet conditions. Here are two problems that I had with it while driving in wet conditions.

1. When I drove over a large puddle of water, the wheel splashed the water into the engine, which then went up the firewall, and completely drenched the windshield. While the CTS has self-activating windshield wipers, it took several seconds before they kicked in; during which time I was basically blind while driving.

2. When the wheels splash water "away" from the vehicle, it throws water on the side windows. If the road has a lot of dirt on it, it will kick up mud and cover the area of the window you need to see the side mirrors.

Other than that, I had no problems with the vehicle. It drove like a charm and I really liked the rear DVD-player. If I had a newborn though, I wouldn't drive him or her around in it during wet conditions because it would be too unsafe for me.

Very expensive to maintain. Even tires, exhaust systems, etc. will cost more and yes they tend to need a lot of service. The Chevy Impala rides very well and is reliable. The Impala would cost you less to buy and to keep on the road and if you get the smaller V6 (3.4 liter on used ones, 3.5 liter now) you will get great gas mileage. Conservative drivers report averaging over 30 mpg when 2/3 highway 1/3 city driving.
