My dad is 50 and he was sick with a respiratory infection for a few days, and then it turned into pneumonia. Last night they discovered the antibiotics werent working as well as they thought and the pneumonia spread to both lungs. they found alot of blood in his lungs after working on his lungs some. they put him on a ventilator and hes in a medical coma right now. it would help if someone had any idea on what his chance of surviving it might be

I'm so sorry your dad is going through that at such a young age. Unfortunately without all the records (specifics on blood test, what the xrays show, what the blood gasses are, what the physical assessment shows, etc) it is impossible for us on this message board to know your dad's prognosis. I am assuming your dad is in the ICU, so when you visit him next, bring a list of questions and talk to the nurse and/or doctor about the specifics. They will be able to supply you with a lot of answers.

Best wishes for your family.

Wow, scary stuff, I hope your dad recovers soon. Being on a ventilator/medical induced coma is not a death sentence, despite what we see on TV. And 50 isn't "old" by today's standards, so that's good.

Has he been evaluated for the swine flu? It has an affinity for the lungs! The induced coma can help him have the time to recover. Is he on double-or triple-antibiotic therapy? I've read on MedPageToday that this is sometimes used for swine flu.

Hoping for the very best for your dad!
