I need help with setting up a multiplayer game?

Im trying to set up a LAN game with a few friends at school who all have laptops. we dont have internet at school (well we do but the proxys destroy any gaming) and im trying to figure out how we can connect our games to play.. say crysis wars or CSS. I know little about LAN's but i know they require cables? do I need to have a router or can we just hook our laptops together with cross over coards? does ad hoc work for gaming? what ever method you guys decide works best could you also give the steps to connect?
