We did an activity and these are the objective, materials, and procedure:
Objective: To compute the heat of fusion of ice from experiment.
Materials: calorimeter, digital balance, ice cubes, thermometer, set of masses, towel
Procedure:
1. Find the mass of the empty inner cup of the calorimeter. Fill it about half full of water having a temperature of about 35 degrees celsius, and find the mass of the calorimeter cup and water.
2. Replace the cup in its insulating shell. Stir the water in the calorimeter and read its temperature to the nearest tenth of a degree.
3. Wipe two cubes, or an equivalent amount of ice chunks, with a towel to remove adhering water.
4. Put the dry ice cubes in the calorimeter carefully so that there is no splashing.
5. Stir rather rapidly until all the ice is melted, read the temperature to the nearest tenth of a degree.
6. Remove the calorimeter cup from its shell and find the combined mass of the cup and its contents. Make a second trial.
Now we were asked this question which I need you to help me with: How can heat of fusion be used to guard against frost damage?
