I need help with a 1981 Ford Ranger transmission?

Hate to say it but yeah take it to a transmission shop. It may be something simple right now like a loose or clogged vacuum hose or line but that could quickly turn into something way more expensive. I'm pretty sure that old of a Ranger would probably have a C-4 transmission in it. They are fairly inexpensive to repair if it does need rebuilt. Does the trans fluid smell burnt, look black in color instead of red? Or does it have small pieces of metal in it? If so drop the pan and inspect what is inside there. If you see pieces of metal or chunks then you'll definitley have to take it to a transmission shop. Hope this advice helped you out.

with it being full of fluid, more than likely it has internal issues. with sitting, the lip seal and o-ring in the forward drum are most likely hardened, causing a severe enough pressure loss to not engage, or fall out of gear.

Automatic transmission behind a 300 I6. The engine is new and the transmission fluid is full. That being said, the transmission refuses to go into 1st gear until I start reving the engine then it engages, it will then "slip" out of gear for the first 5 minutes or so and I have to rev the engine until it "grabs" again. It did not act this way until it was parked for about 3 years; being run, but not moved, every week or two.

Anyone want to walk me thrrough inexpensive possibilities/fixes before I take in it to a transmission shop?
I wasn't afraid of a transmission shop just wanted to test everything first. It is a C-4 Transmission and likely the only original part on the truck. Anyone know what a general range is for repair work vs. replacing with a rebuilt?
