the two "wings" on the sides are solar panels. they collect sun light and turn it into electrical power.

plastic works. try buying a few model car models that you glue and put together yourself, then paint. Use the big bottom flat part of the car to build a cube.
(cut them in half or 4 pieces or buy two models or something like that if you want it fairly big)
some of the pieces may be attached to long plastic rods that can be used for pieces too. also you might find some other useful parts.
paper clips. If they're hot they might be able to melt "into" the plastic model pieces and add some nice metallic elements
and foil too maybe.
plus some modeling glue or super glue.
then some acrylic paints.
find a good looking pic and use it as your reference image, but be creative and build on to the idea.
(I'm not sure how to make a dish, but you might just "conveniently" forget to put one on)
