I have the MALM bedroom set in birch veneer and after a few years, I have decided I want to paint it black.

I started with the MALM 3 drawer chest today.

I went to Home Depot today to get paint and for some reason, the associate said I did not need to sand the wood. I have never painted furniture before so I believed him. He gave me the BEHR Primer and Paint in one. Anyhow, its been 4 hours now and Ive noticed that if I run my fingernail over the paint, it just scrapes right off.

My friends told me to get an electric sander and sand it down and restart. Is this going to affect anything? There is already paint on it.

I need some MAJOR help, I don't know what to do!

How to I fix this mistake??
i just tested a small part with my finger and the paint literally comes right off. was he right by not needing to sand?
